Shellac

Thursday 12th December

A self-described "minimalist rock trio," Shellac are a band who've succeeded despite their severe disinterest in the standard operating procedures of the music business, even by the relaxed standards of indie rock. Shellac (or, as they sometimes bill themselves, Shellac of North America) don't tour very often, they release recordings even less frequently, they do little if anything to promote their albums, their live appearances have more to do with places they'd like to visit than what constitutes a good market, and they have no interest in making their work user friendly. Despite this, Shellac have won a loyal international following for their jagged but rich blend of fractured, metallic-sounding guitar (literally metallic, as guitarist Steve Albini favors aluminum-neck guitars and copper picks), deep throbbing bass, and drumming that serves as both rhythmic foundation and melodic punctuation. Featuring three noted figures from underground and independent music -- Steve Albini, Bob Weston, and Todd Trainer -- Shellac's sound, informed by noise rock and math rock, was introduced on a pair of 1993 singles, The Rude Gesture: A Pictorial History and Uranus, and while they expanded into longer and more adventurous structures on 1998's Terraform and 2007's Excellent Italian Greyhound, the musical signature and the vital interplay between the three musicians remain distinctly their own, leaving room for improvisation and creative experimentation within their artfully burly sound.

Stereo MC's

Friday 13th December

Club Academy

Born out of the mid 80's inspirational Hip Hop scene and the DIY UK acid house/club scene, Stereo Mc's reputation grew slowly throughout the late 80's. They started an underground dance label, releasing diverse artists from Richie Rich to the Jungle Brothers as well as their own records before being picked up by Island Records. They performed live extensively and supported groups such as De La Soul, A Certain Ratio, EMF and U2 and did US and UK tours with The Happy Mondays.

After early chart success in America for their 2nd LP Supernatural, they recorded the Album 'Connected' which became an international hit. They embarked on a huge touring schedule including memorable appearances at Glastonbury and many other festivals worldwide. This period culminated with a Mercury prize nomination and 2 Brit awards for Best Album and Best Live Act. Aside from following on their remix activity with mixes for Tricky Madonna and Quannum Mc's amongst others, a period of relative silence followed. They emerged 7 years later with their K7 DJ Kicks LP, followed quickly by the top 20 LP and single 'Deep Down and Dirty'. A return to independent labels in 2005 rejuvenated the band and has seen them making new LP's and touring regularly.

Most recently their love of underground dance music has led to many collaborations including those with Terranova (Kompakt Records) and Adam Port from the Berlin based KeineMusik label, releasing the deep house track 'Place' a firm favourite in the Beatport charts in 2014 -2015. They also continue to build a reputation as cutting edge DJs in the underground club scene. With many new releases also imminent, Universal/Island records have also released a box set 'Collected' of all the LP's to date, containing 8 albums, videos, outtakes, rarities, unreleased tracks and remixes.

With a reputation as a unique and high energy live act, they undertook an extensive 23 date tour of Central and Eastern Europe in November 2014. UK, European and US dates are continuing into 2015 and beyond.

Bury Tomorrow Performing 'Black Flame' in full

After three years of playing throughout the UK/Europe, playing everywhere they could and to anyone that would listen, Bury Tomorrow recorded their anticipated debut full length album ‘Portraits’ in London at Wellerhill Studios, and after it’s initial release on UK label Basick Records in October 2009, the band gained the interest of fans throughout the world which ultimately led them to an encounter with The Artery Foundation. Eric Rushing, founder and owner of The Artery Foundation asserted, “Their songs are so catchy and melodic at times but then just as brutal and hard at others. We are very excited to introduce such a great band to the US.” A US & Japanese release of Portraits followed in March 2010, which led the band to embark on a year of extensive touring, including multiple US/UK/EURO tours and a Japanese run at the end of 2010. The band are currently working on a second album that they hope to release at the end of 2011.

“We titled the album Portraits for two reasons. Firstly, the title track is based on the story of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, a cautionary tale of the beauty and frailty of life. Secondly, Portraits depicts a person or character frozen in time as they were at a given moment. This is how we see this album - it’s a reflection of our tastes, loves, hates, losses and gains. It’s a memory in musical form, the first glimpse of the picture that is Bury Tomorrow.”
So speaks Adam Jackson (drums) of the band Bury Tomorrow - five guys from both Southampton and Portsmouth, United Kingdom who deliver a furious melodic assault with the aggression of metal combined with the hooks of rock.
