Vampire Weekend was born in the City of New York during 2006, and is comprised of Erza Koenig on guitar and vocals, Rostam Batmanglij on Keys, Chris Tomson on drums and Chris Baio on bass. Honing their sound as “Upper West Side Soweto”, VW play indie pop/rock at its finest, with injections of afro-beat that draws influence from many African musical styles. The name Vampire Weekend was inspired by the name of a low-budget movie that Koenig constructed whilst at University, and during this time, the band commenced playing small gigs at their University’s literary societies and parties. The word began to spread about the band’s innovative sound and lyrics just as VW self-released a few EP’s, which were recorded in locations from their Uni dorm rooms, to a family barn. The buzz around the band was gaining momentum in early 2007 when the band were earning public attention through their blogs. Local media began to cite the band as part of the ‘blog band phenomenon’ during their rise to a record deal. Their self-titled debut album, ‘Vampire Weekend’ was released on January 29th in the UK, after the band signed with XL Recordings in the autumn of 2007. Spin magazine has recently hailed Vampire Weekend as ‘The Year’s Best New Band’ and they became the first band to be placed on the cover of the magazine before their debut release. Rolling Stone has also supported the band; recently placing 'Cape Cod Kwassa' at number 57 for the top 100 songs of 2007. The band are currently on their first major tour covering North America, finishing off with a highly respected slot at Coachella 2008 in Indo, California. Why not see what all the fuss is about when VW embark on their debut headline tour of the UK, stopping at Manchester Academy 2 on Thursday 8th May. |
