"We only write about two feelings: one is the first day of summer when you and all of your friends are standing on the edge of a cliff watching the sun set and being overcome with all of your hopes and dreams at once. The other is when you're walking alone in the rain and realize you will be alone forever."

Brooklyn-based band The Drums formed in late 2008 from the ashes of electro pop group Elkland (formerly Goat Explosion). Founding members Pierce and Graham have been friends since their early childhood, they joined with Adam Kessler and Connor Hanwick to complete the line up and initially set up residency at a small club in Manhattan. Word of mouth quickly spread and by the end of June 2009, The Drum’s concerts had become a weekly dance party attended religiously by the most critical music fans in New York. Before long, The Drums were hailed ‘New York’s official coolest new band’ by NME and their explosive live shows were receiving rave reviews far and wide.

In December 2009 the band were shortlisted as one of the fifteen groups for the BBC Sound of 2010 and were positioned at number five on this list in January 2010. The Drums were also listed as both NME and Clash magazine’s hopes for 2010 and were voted ‘Best Hope For 2010’ in Pitchfork’s 2009 reader’s poll.

The band have played alongside such bands as The Maccabees, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Big Pink, Florence and The Machine and Kings of Leon. They cite their major influences as The Smiths, Joy Division, The Wake, The Zombies, The Legends, The Shangri-Las and Orange Juice.

The Drums released their eponymous debut album in June 2010. The album was received extremely well by both fans and critics. The NME gave the album 8/10, saying ‘The Drums have proved…there’s still a hurricane of heartsore life in guitar pop’. Q magazine gave the album four stars, saying that ‘The Drums provide its steadiest beat in years’, with reference to the album’s impact on the indie music genre.

See The Drums perform live at Manchester Academy on Monday 6th December.
