The Blackout consists of six feisty junk-filled lads from the rock n roll hub of the UK – Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales.
They only came together in 2003 and since then have gone on some sort of wonderful musical blazing rampage. They have managed to infiltrate the minds of all self-respecting post-hardcore fans, invading the music boxes in unsuspecting folks’ heads like a filthsome disease pumping through the veins of its victim. Apart from The Blackout ain’t no disease. More of a frickin’ amazing metal/punk/indie crossover collection of unstoppable talent and cheeky good looks. Uh huh, the disease analogy is looking more and more redundant to us, too. Ah well. Move on.
So the line-up. First up folks, we have the delightful Gavin Butler and magnificent Sean Smith, both beasting up the vocals in the most wonderful way that only they can do. Next in line are the guitar-wielding duo James Davies and Matthew Davies who certainly do know how to wield a guitar with the utmost success. They strum and strum and that kind of thing and just generally make joyous (read: raucous/guttural/awesome) noises via their musical vehicle. Next! The bass guitar is gently stroked and caressed by the tender fingers of our darling Rhys Lewis from this here The Blackout, and the drums is bangiddy-banged by sticks being brandished by the hands of Gareth Lawrence.
So after these young boy-men joined together in 2003 they threw out into the ether for our listening delight a three-song EP of the demo variety – Pull No Punches. We lapped it up and you know it. They launched themselves into the UK club circuit and over the following two years, became a ferocious force. Fierce Panda Records snapped the whippers up in 2006, leading finally to the release of their first full length studio album – We Are the Dynamite, in 2007.
Since then they have put their feet upon the same stage as all kinds of rock royalty – Funeral for a Friend, Avenged Sevenfold, Thrice – you get the gist. Summer 2009 saw The Blackout release their first album with current label Epitaph, which was aptly entitled The Best in Town.
The Blackout are on to something here. Come and see exactly what, on Saturday 5th November at Academy 1. |
