Pessimistically titled band One Night Only are coming to Manchester Academy to a gig on what will probably be approximately their 2615th night, having formed some seven years ago. (Yes, we're a fan of arithmetic around here.) You shouldn't do yourself down lads, you're really rather good. And nobody likes a fibber.

Names aside, One Night Only are a force that are only planning on getting stronger. From humble beginnings playing local shows, the band made a breakthrough with 'You and Me', their debut single in 2007. It may have just failed to sneak into the Top 40 by reaching Number 46, but they didn't see this as a bad thing. Just ask Rik Waller how nice it'd be to have a Number 46. The optimism paid off as the anthemic second single 'Just For Tonight' fought its way into the Top Ten in 2008, getting in at Number 9. Don't ask Rik about that, you'll make him cry.

'Started A Fire', the successful debut album, was a ticket to tours and big shows; getting gigs with Milburn and The Pigeon Detectives as well as sets at The Isle of Wight Festival and Glastonbury. Their definite brand of atmospheric crowd-pleasers was a welcome addition to the ever growing indie-pop family, headed by Mummy-Scouting-For-Girls and Daddy-The-Courteeners. Catchy beats, soaring sing-along choruses, great touches of synth, and a memorable vocal style all helped One Night Only make a name for themselves.

They have penned over 25 new songs since the release of ' Started A Fire'. All of the elements that captured their first audiences still prevail, but there are clear signs of development in the next chapter of One Night Only. There is more of a leaning towards the 80s revival that has served so well for recent indie pop successes; which also is a plus for anybody that likes a little dance. The first single 'Say You Don't Want It' from this summer's self-titled second album, even features Emma 'Hermione Granger' Watson in it's video. Let's hope that some of her magic rubs off on the band. Ahh, pun-tastic.

One Night Only play Manchester Academy 3 on Thursday 28th October.
