American rock band My Morning Jacket is renowned for their reverb-heavy sound, which is a mixture of indie rock, country rock, Southern rock and psychedelic rock. Consisting of members Jim James (vocals, guitar), ‘Two Tone’ Tommy (bass), Patrick Hallahan (drums), Carl Broemel (guitar, saxaphone, vocals) and Bo Koster (keyboards), the band is well known for their enthusiastic and energetic live shows. The band formed in 1998 in Louisville, Kentucky and signed to ATO Records four years later. The band’s name originates from a discarded coat that lead singer James found whilst sifting through the remains of his favourite bar after it burned down. The coat was embroidered with the letters ‘MMJ’ on it. My Morning Jacket have released four full-length studio albums to date, their latest being 2005’s ‘Z’, which has a much more polished sound than previous My Morning Jacket releases. The album makes heavy use of synthesizers throughout whilst also incorporating reggae and dub. The album was the second highest rated album of 2005 according to Metacritic. A double album ‘Okonokos’ was recorded during the ‘Z’ tour and was released in September 2006. The album features eight of the ten ‘Z’ tracks. The band recently released their fifth full-length studio album in June this year, titled ‘Evil Urges’. It is the first album to feature vocals from band members other than James who has spoken of the album saying that the band wanted to get away from “normal rock and roll sounds” and emulate more of the band’s live sound. With ‘Evil Urges’ they have created a much more diverse sound. My Morning Jacket will be performing live at Manchester Academy 2 on Thursday 13th November. |
