When you hear people say something like, 'I am going to perform a song by The Smiths. But with my own twist'; usually on the twit-riddled talent shows of prime time telly, you wince and prepare yourself for the devastating slaughter of all that is good and pure. The same goes with talk of meddling with the sacred material of the likes of Radiohead, and the successful songs of Coldplay and The Zutons. However, it was in perfecting the cover version that Mark Ronson turned all of our heads. One word. Valerie.

Drafting in the likes of Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen and Daniel Merriweather, 'Version', Ronson's second album earned the producer extraordinaire three top ten hits, a Brit Award and would pave the way to three Grammy Awards. Very nice indeed.

An incredibly talented chap, Mark Ronson has managed to get a hell of a lot crammed onto his artistic CV. His debut album was essentially a slicker creation of a one man band. Packing a full flavour of the funk and hip-hop he used to spin as a DJ in downtown New York in the 90's, 'Here Comes The Fuzz' features his writing, beats, keyboards, guitar and bass playing. How very knackering. But his hard work paid off. Critical acclaim has been showered upon his head ever since. If you don't remember it... what about 'Ooh Wee'? Ah, see you do know it.

The next chapter of The Genius of Mark Ronson has taken him back down those rhythmic hip-hop routes. Now masquerading beneath the guise of 'Mark Ronson & The Business Intl', the new material cued to fly into your eardrums is as fresh and funky as you could ever hope for. 'Bang Bang Bang' gets yummier with every listen and will be even more of a treat to experience live.

Mark Ronson comes to play Manchester Academy 1 on Saturday 2nd October.
