This is a man who became notorious for his talents for alternative rap as part of Ultramagnetic MC's, responsible for producing some of the most delectable hip hop since 1984. Since then, he has operated under the guise of Dr. Octogon; not as a super villain in a comic strip as the name might suggest, but releasing 'Dr. Octagonecologyst' in 1995. I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, 'that album title sounds suspiciously like that medical profession which involves rummaging around lady gardens and such all day'. You ain't wrong. It was perhaps a precursor to the future preoccupations with the young beat bombardier. Kool Keith sure does love the ladies.
This guy is the self-proclaimed inventor of the 'pornocore' sub-genre of hip hop. Yeah, there is such a thing and it does what it says on the tin. The sexy, sexy tin. 1996's first release under the new name of Kool Keith was an album called 'Sex Style', featuring songs 'Don't Crush It' and 'In Your Face'. Those titles alone are enough to make the imagination blush. Later hits like 'Break U Off' and tracks like 'Wet You Up', 'Spread 'Em' and 'Sex You Up' mean that you might need to take a sneaky pack of Kleenex into the venue. You won't have experienced anything so mucky since that night in Amsterdam you've vowed never to speak about.
Before you get too, erm, excited... should also tell you that Kool Keith is also a pioneer of 'Horrorcore'. Well, the two have always been inextricably linked really haven't they? Think about all the guaranteed boobs you get in slasher films. It's this second sub-genre that's produced tracks like 'Do It 2 Death' and 'Freaks'. So, all things considered, you can most definitely attend this gig expecting something very intense and like you've never experienced before.
Kool Keith plays Manchester Academy 2 on Saturday 28th May. Prudes may want to re-think buying a ticket.
