Jonsi is perhaps best known for being the vocalist and guitarist of the Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Ros, who are currently on an indefinate hiatus due to many of the members recently having children.

Jonsi has also been involved with other acts, including Bee Spiders, who were often likened to The Smashing Pumpkins and a grunge band called Stoned. He has also used the alias Frakkur to release his solo material.

Jonsi also collaborated with his boyfriend Alex Somers on their album Riceboy Sleeps under the moniker Jonsi and Alex. The instrumental album was recorded in Iceland and played solely on acoustic instruments, with appearances by Amiina.

Jonsi’s debut solo album, Go, was released on 5th April 2010. The album was sung mainly in English, compared to his previous work, which is mostly sung in Icelandic and Hopelandic. The otherworldly force is still strong in this release due to Jonsi’s strikingly distinctive vocal style. Go is heavily indebted to American composer Nico Muhly, who skillfully fuses tuneful pop with the avant-garde. Go truly is a phenomenal record; delivering soul, fun, naivety and fantastical sadness.

See Jonsi perform live at Manchester Academy on Monday 6th September.
