The modern-day blues genius John Mayer is coming to Manchester Academy, and as he usually only plays London when he comes to the UK this is a rare treat. Originally from Connecticut, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue music at a young age. John was inspired to play the guitar from watching Michael J. Fox play a blues solo in Back To The Future, and wrote his first lyrics after being hospitalised for a week at the age of 17. This experience profoundly changed his life, and he says that he became a songwriter at that precise moment. His particular style of blues playing is tinged with pop sensibilities like Eric Clapton, B.B. King and Buddy Guy but owes a debt to Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters too. John has won several Grammys and has released 3 full studio albums as well as a plethora of EPs and singles. His latest album was the critically acclaimed ‘Continuum’ and he has collaborated with many artists, including Alicia Keys, Kanye West and Fall Out Boy. John Mayer’s style was described as ‘agoraphobic chic’ by Time Magazine, which seems to suit his down-to-earth, slightly shy persona. His songs portray a vulnerable, honest young man, and John writes a regular column for Esquire magazine and also writes his own blog. He divides his time between LA and New York, as well as continuing work on his new album, which is eagerly awaited by his massive fanbase. Book tickets early so as not to be disappointed as this is one of only 3 UK dates for John Mayer and his band. |
