Electric Six is a six-piece metro Detroit-based band that plays what has been described as a brand of rock music infused with elements of garage, disco, punk, new wave and metal.
The band formed in 1996 and was initially known as The Wildbunch, though they later dropped their name due to pressure from a Bristol-based trip hop collection of the same name.
The band has had many line up changes over the years, the original members consisted of Dick Valentine (vocals) Rock and Roll Indian (guitar) Surge Joebot (guitar) Disco (bass) and M (drums). Dick Valentine is and has always been the primary songwriter of Electric Six.
The 2003 release of Danger! High Voltage proved to be a massive hit, particularly in the UK. The single was followed by the release of the band’s 2003 breakout album ‘Fire’, which earned the band significant critical success and spawned a second hit single with ‘Gay Bar’. The album made it into several best-of-2003 lists as well as reaching the top ten in the UK album charts.
The band’s second album ‘Senor Smoke’ saw its release on 14th February 2005. The first single from the album put the band at the center of controversy, especially with Queen fans, following a cover of the Queen hit song ‘Radio Ga Ga’. The controversial music video shows lead singer Dick Valentine as the ghost of Queen’s flamboyant lead singer Freddie Mercury and a backing band of poodles. Reportedly, Queen guitarist Brian May liked the video and song.
Electric Six finished recording their third major album ‘Switzerland’ in November 2005. The band intends to record a video for every song, at present eight videos have been released.
October 2007 saw the release of the band’s fourth album ‘I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me From Being The Master’. The title of the album comes from a 1921 drawing by George Grosz, which depicts a grotesque portrayal of a gloating capitalist with a porcine nozzle and cigar smoldering.
A fifth album ‘Flashy’ was released in October 2008. Also the band released a tour only album called ‘Sexy Trash’ – featuring thirty unreleased songs.
‘Kill’ was released in October 2009 and scored highly amongst fans and critics. The album is probably the band’s most aggressive to date, and is packed full with Valentine’s genius lyrics.
On Valentines day 2010, Dick Valentine announced via the Electric Six website that the band are in the process of recording their seventh studio album. Valentine also mentioned that this album would contain a cover song that they had been contemplating for a long time.
Electric Six will be performing live at Manchester Club Academy on Thursday 9th December. |
