Mark Oliver Everett, originally from Virginia, also known as “E”, moved to LA at the age of 24 and began performing in the early nineties as “A Man Called E”. He formed a collaboration with drummer Jonathan “Butch” Norton, later meeting Tommy Walter to form the band Eels. However, in Eels Mark is the main man, other members rotate frequently, both in the studio and on stage.
Beautiful Freak was released in 1996 and achieved international success winning Eels Best international newcomer in 1998 at the Brits. ‘Novocaine for the Soul’ is perhaps one of the most well known tracks on this album and can be heard frequently in the late nineties show ‘Trigger Happy TV’. Since then the band has gone through numerous changes, “E” remaining the driving force releasing to date 9 studio albums, the latest three forming a trilogy.
June 2nd, 1999 saw the release of Hombre Lobo – the first of the concept album trilogy (meaning werewolf or wolf man in Spanish), which may be referencing the beard E grew when writing the track “Dog Faced Boy”. It is the seventh studio album and was the highest charting Eels album ever.
End Times was the next installment of the trilogy. Largely recorded on a four track by Mark Oliver Everett in his Los Angeles basement this has been called a “divorce album”, about an artist in uncertain times who has lost his love and, teetering on self-destruction.
Tomorrow Morning released 2010 could not be more different from its predecessors, seeing Eels come out of the other side of an emotional turmoil, recovered and invigorated - the brightest Eels album in their fourteen-year career.
This latest trilogy has been hugely celebrated by the music press and sees Eels move from strength to strength.
Eels will be performing at Manchester Academy 1 on September 4th, their only UK date of the tour. |
