Brighton’s Blood Red Shoes are Laura-Mary Carter (vocals/guitar) and Steven Ansell (vocals/drums). Drawing a line between Fugazi and PJ Harvey, via Blur and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs the band’s sound is a taut, intelligent mix of hard-hitting drums, jangly circular riffs and dual vocals. Taking their name from a painful anecdote often repeated by Ginger Rogers (she once had to repeat a tap move so many times her shoes were left filled with hew own blood) they have been together since jamming together as strangers in 2004. Although they had been releasing their own 7-inch singles since 2005 Blood Red Shoes debut album ‘Box of Secrets’ did not come out until 2008, giving them time to refine their confident punk rock attitude and develop a truly explosive live energy. Like the first album, sophomore effort ‘Fire Like This’ is produced by Mike Crossey and many reviewers have picked up on the quality of his simple approach: analogue equipment and minimal overdubs have allowed the raw quality of the music to speak for itself. The band are set to perform at dozens of festivals over the summer but like all the best rock’n’roll two piece (White Stripes/The Kills) their magic is best witnessed in close quarters - so this Academy 3 show promises to be quite a treat. |
